When you have an old deck that you are ready to remove, it can be difficult to know where to start this is a large-scale project that takes specialized tools to get the job done. You want to make sure that you approach this project in an organized way to make it as easy as possible to get done. MCM Hauling is here to share some of the steps necessary to remove an old deck from your property.
Gather the Right Equipment
There is going to be some specialized equipment that is needed to get rid of your old deck. One of the very first things that you are going to need to do is gather the right equipment to get the job done. Here are some of the tools that you are going to want and need:
– Gloves
– Sledgehammer
– Pry bar
– Screwdriver
– Saw
– Personal protection equipment
Take Off Any Railing
There are many decks that have a railing around the outer edge. This is going to be the first thing that you will work to remove. This process goes a lot smoother when you work in a slow and methodical way. You will first start by taking off the top portion of the railing and then moving to each of the spindles after that.
Removing the Deck Boards
Once you have gotten the entire railing system off of your deck, you can start working on removing the deck boards. You will start by removing the screws and then using a pry bar to pull up every one of the boards, one by one. Be patient as this part of the process is one of the most time consuming. This is especially true when you are dealing with incredibly long boards that need to be cut down to a manageable size.
Carefully Remove the Stairs
The next step in the process is going to be to remove the stairs. There were more than likely be screws as well as nails holding them together. Just like with the boards, you will start by removing the screws and then using a pry bar you will pull apart the nails.
Dismantle the Decking Joints
The last thing that you are going to have to pry apart is the decking joints. These decking joints are large and can be difficult to pry apart. You might find that you need to use the sledgehammer to encourage them to come apart.
Remove the Support Deck Posts
To remove the support deck post, you are going to have to dig the soil around them. This will help to loosen them up. Once you have removed the soil, you are going to also have to break up the concrete that is used to keep them in place.
